Beauty In The End

When I was studying pencil as my primary medium, I had to create twenty pieces of art that followed the same concept. My concept was Beauty In The End. I wanted to explore the idea that no matter how scary an idea is, there is always something beautiful that comes from it.

Why A Skull?

I chose to draw bones because I thought it would be a challenging way to learn shading and the power of contrast. I was using charcoal pencils to give the shading depth and began layering shades of pencils to create a smooth effect.

Why a Flower

Flowers represent life. I wanted to show that even when something appears dried up or when your life feels stuck, there is always a hope that something can grow from it. A flower shows the beauty that can be found no matter where you are.

Why Pencil and Coffee?

Did I say coffee? Yes I did! I chose two draw in pencil because I like the control I have. You can layer and change direction at your own whim. This was my very first time using colored pencil so I could explore shading in color and navigate the importance of utilizing white.

Now, what I am sure you are all wondering, why coffee? Well, one day someone spilled coffee on a piece I was working on. I thought, you know that looks pretty good! So for the rest of the 20 pieces, I brushed on some coffee!
